Empowering Indigenous Women Program

Empowering Indigenous women to become effective leaders of conservation and sustainable development projects

The struggle Indigenous women from the Amazon have to defend their rights and territory, facing social gaps and threats, is one of the goals of international agendas such as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Indigenous and ILO Convention 169. These treaties prompt the adoption of measures like gender equality, women’s empowerment, and inter-generation equity, as well as the adaptation and capacity building to face climate change.

Promoting and supporting female leaders in the cross-border region of Yurúa and Alto Tamaya

The Indigenous Women Program (PMI, in Spanish) was created in the Ucayali Region under the leadership of the Regional Organization AIDESEP Ucayali (ORAU, in Spanish) in order to organize and strengthen Indigenous women from Ucayali in the defense of their rights, culture and territory. Upper Amazon Conservancy has started an important partnership to strengthen, promote and support female leaders of the PMI ORAU and take action in the cross-border region of the Yurúa and Alto Tamaya.

We have addressed the gender issue together, as a key component for the sustainable development and empowerment of Indigenous women from the native communities of the Association of Native Communities for the Comprehensive Development of the Yurúa - Yono - Sharakoiai (ACONADIYSH), federative branch of the ORAU, within the framework of environmental agendas worldwide.
